Running Single Deeps to Increase Honey Production
Frank from Mann Lake introduces the concept of single-deep beekeeping, explaining how he transitioned from using double deeps to single deeps. He observed that the top deep often contained crystallized honey that was hard to extract. He details how this method reduces work and prevents swarming, especially by adding supers. This approach also ensures bees have enough space and resources throughout the seasons, particularly in northern climates. Frank encourages beekeepers to try different methods and adapt based on their goals.

Have you tried Ultra Bee Rocket Fuel?
Good information 👍 thanks 😊
Hope they request themselves
I had been running single deeps and went back to doubles this year. I don’t like them. When should I break them down to singles again? After I harvest in a couple of weeks and home they request,or wait until spring and buy queens.?
Thanks. Great info
Trapping any drones that hatched in the honey super. I did that, oops.
2:52 That's not a super! You added that box UNDER the queen excluder therefore it is a part of the brood chamber. Your muddling of terminology confuses beekeepers, especially those new to the field.
Modern Mann Lake Brad.
That is not a true Demaree split. A Demaree split requires all but one frame of brood to be moved up above the honey supers. The frames moved up are replaced with either drawn comb if you have it or foundation or both to fill the brood box.
Would like to see the different types of mite treatment, thanks for the good info
I may have to try the demaree. It's definitely a fine line trying to prevent swarms but yet have a good honey crop.
Good informative information. Thanks
You did it wrong. Remove the video and make a new one
I dont think they need more food. Looks like failing queen. If anything the queen has nowhere else to lay because of all the food. Take away food and give drawn comb.
GREAT video for transitioning into a sideliner! Thanks for sharing 🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
Are queens reared from a inoculated queen considered vaccinated?
Queen produced from vaccinated queens will be, but the offspring they produce are not considered inoculated.
Another consideration not addressed is the number of tiers or integrated vent hood 'arches' in front of your face. Too many, such as three, obstructs your view and interferes with head motion and inhibits close viewing of frames, especially if any vision irregularities. I have the vented jacket with minimal arches so that I can look closely for eggs or other features on a frame.
Looks like a failing queen to me
Pinch and combine,
Exsactly more food is going to make it worse too. Have seen newly mated queens in hives full of food small brood nest lay away like crazy once drawn polished comb was added. Bees collect a lot of honey when they don’t have a queen. This is what happens before the new queen starts to lay with a big colony and heavy nectar flow. So either failing queen or new queen. No need to feed.
I’d love to see something on fixing/preventing wonky comb and how you guys believe wax should be applied to foundation. Thanks for the videos!
If you're using the black plastic foundation, it really needs a heavy wax coating on it...they don't seem to draw on it properly otherwise. I've had wonky comb on the yellow plastic too, not near as bad, but it's usually a result of a poor wax coating. Actual wax foundation seems to be ideal. Various videos are floating on UA-cam about how to recoat plastic foundation using your beeswax.
Great suggestion!
Great interview David!
We are glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the guidance 😊
You're welcome!
Enjoy your videos. Still waiting for the West Coast update
Coming soon!
Do we need to remove the attendant bees first?
Attendant bees should be left in with the queen when installing in the hive.
I am running 2 deeps as a hive I only have 3
Thank you for review especially direction of your metal Queen excluder! Jim -Florence. SC
Glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful!
I call bs. iv been breeding my own for yrs tightens the bloodline ..
Loved this video. Great!
Thank you!
I use my formic pro pad(s) between double deeps.
What are the temperature requirements?
This product should not be applied with daytime highs exceeding 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the treatment window.
How do you build the HDO concrete form board hive covers?
I also sell honey at a Barbershop, great video. Jumped up to sideliner status last year. Hearing "streamlined" vs "micro-managed" put things into perspective.
great lecture, BUT show the power points! The camera person needs to show the power points, lots of information not shown,
Thank you for the suggestion.
Looking forward to seeing her speak in person tomorrow
We hope you enjoyed watching her speak!
Please provide us with the reference for the peer-reviewed "scientific data" that shows Pro-DFM make a significant difference in colonies.
We do not own the intellectual property to link directly, but studies can be found by searching beneficial microorganisms for honey bees.
Thanks you make it so easy.
He really does make it look easy!
This is the best video I've seen on doing a split. You made it very easy to understand!! Thanks
We are glad you found it helpful!
Wouldn’t it be better to leave the new split and take the one with the queen so that foragers flying back strengthen the new split?
That works if you are allowing the bees to make their own queen. However, I have found if I do that and ADD a queen to the split, they replace her very quickly. There are a lot of ways to do the same thing - try them all! it's the only way we learn! Good luck with your beekeeping. Frank.
Thank you! This is my new splitting method!
Thx Frank
Great stuff here.
Thank you!
Could you have added a second deep back on top of the original colony?
Yes, absolutely. Since I run single deeps during the flow, I rarely do. I have weakened it enough so it won't swarm, make a good amount of honey. Then in fall, I will add either a medium or deep brood to overwinter. if I plan on splitting it 50/50, I add a deep, otherwise I add a medium. If I overwinter in a deep/medium configuration, those hives are demaree in spring (a whole other topic).
Did u look in the purple box before doing the split?
Yes, I actually did. To keep the video short and sweet, I didn't show that - I probably should have. Since it was early spring most of the brood will be in the top box, which is what you want. If I split it 3 weeks later, I definitely would have balanced the brood so I had mostly open brood in the top box, and more capped in the bottom.
Will you put another hive body on each or go straight to a super when they are ready?
Since these hives are located in our PA location, we prefer to run two deeps, we will add another brood box before putting a super on.
Well...that depends. Since my goal is honey production, I USUALLY just put on honey supers. But adding another deep is fine. I add another brood box (a deep or medium) in early fall to overwinter.
Thanks for doing this video. You made it seem very easy, rather than very confusing, and that's just what we needed. 🐝🐝
Glad it was helpful!
Very good idea! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Great video.
Thanks!
Still fuzzy on a drone being a grandfather and not a father.
It can be a father if it gets the chance to mate but she’s saying that it doesn’t have a father due to it being an infertile egg so a drone didn’t contribute to the creation of a new drone but the queen came from a generation before so it inherited genes from the queen which laid the egg (the mother) and the drone that fertilized the previous egg that produced the queen (the grandfather)
How many frames of brood did you leave in the original box with the queen? I'm sorry, I must of missed that.
No more than 5
Depending on the strength of the colony, leave 4 or 5 frames.
Easy explained ty au
You're welcome!
Excellent lecture! Thanks so much!
Glad you enjoyed it!
